10,000 Nigerians have died crossing the Mediterranean this year

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reported that no fewer than 10,000 Nigerians died between January and May 2017 while trying to illegally migrate through the Mediterranean Sea and the deserts. The Punch on Saturday quoted NIS Assistant Comptroller-General, in charge of training, manpower and development, Mr. Maroof Giwa, who spoke in Ilorin, on the sidelines of a training on ‘trafficking in persons/smuggling of migrants at various borders’. He said 4,900 Nigerians died in the Mediterranean Sea while the rest died while going through the deserts in their bid to cross to Europe. This is just as the Kwara State Comptroller, NIS, Mrs. Abiodun Abimbola-Ojo, said the command rescued no fewer than 36 victims of trafficking from 2015 till date. She also urged people to provide NIS with useful information that would aid the agency to effectively combat trafficking. Ajaokuta steel company to create 500,000 upstream, downstream employment, Administrator

The Federal Government says the first phase of Ajaokuta Steel Company will provide 500,000 upstream and downstream employment when it becomes operational.   Mr Isah Onobere, the Sole Administrator of the company made this known during a media tour to the company on Friday Onobere said that the first phase of the plant would also provide direct employment for 10,000 technical staff when inaugurated. He also said the first phase had been completed, adding that it was envisaged to produce 1.3 million tonnes of liquid steel per annum. 5 die as soldiers, policemen clash over girlfriend in Damaturu

DAMATURU—a  clash between soldiers and policemen over a girlfriend left four mobile police officers and one soldier dead  in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, yesterday, with several others injured. Among the wounded mobile police officer is Buba Dauda, the Mobile Commander in Yobe State, whose abduction by the soldiers in the wee hours of yesterday triggered the face-off between the two security agencies. Abuja – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted cloudy weather condition over the central states of the country on Tuesday, with chances of localised thunderstorms over Ibi and Mambilla during the morning hours. NiMet’s Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office (CFO) on Monday in Abuja, also predicted localised thunderstorms over the high ground areas later in the day. It added that the central states would have day and night temperatures of 31 to 38 and 18 to 25 degrees Celsius respectively.
