Reps probe ‘forceful marriage’ of Katsina teen

Image
The House of Representatives has mandated two of its committees to investigate the alleged abduction and forceful marriage of 14-year old Habiba Isa in Katsina State. The House noted with concern recent media reports that Habiba, from Warkaza community in Kankara local government area was married off forcefully. Adopting a motion by Rep Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe (PDP, Imo) the House said Section 21 of the Child’s Rights Act provides that “No person shall remove or take a child out of the custody or protection of his father or mother or guardian against the will of the father, mother or guardian.” The lawmakers added that the alleged marriage was without the consent of her parents, who have been reported to be under threat and harassment over their request for the release of their daughter. If nothing was done, the House said the trend might continue, which would be a threat to peace and unity in the country. The House asked the committees on Women Affairs and Human Rights to probe ...

Must Read: Why recession may not end in 2017

Economic recessions occur when aggregate spending by governments, consumers and investors drop below the levels required to sustain the previous tempo of economic activity. Recovery starts when increased spending occurs significantly. Furthermore, a recession such as Nigeria is experiencing does not come suddenly. There usually are signs to indicate that the economy is slowing down. The signs were there for quite some time but we failed to act. Unfortunately, when such signs occur in a fledgling democracy, especially within an election year or a period of high transitional activities, the tendency is always for the ruling party to ignore them. Economists and other experts pointing to the imminent drop in economic activity are dismissed as alarmists. Back in 1981, when the leader of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and main opposition group, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, warned the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) Federal Government led by President Shehu Shagari about the in...

US Embassy owes Reps apologies

Image
THE long-awaited report of the Hon. Nicholas Ossai-led House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges probing the alleged sexual misconduct of three members of the House while on an official assignment to Cleveland, Ohio in the United States of America in April this year, has come out with a verdict of not guilty. This verdict is hardly surprising, in view of the fact that former US Ambassador James Entwistle, who levelled the allegations against Hon Samuel Ikon (PDP Akwa Ibom), Hon Mark Gbillah (APC Benue) and Hon. Mohammed Gololo (APC Bauchi), failed to appear or send representation to tender any evidence to buttress his accusations. Entwistle had, in a damning letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara on June 9th, 2016, accused Gololo of sexually harassing a hotel chamber maid, while Gbillah and Ikon were said to have solicited for the services of prostitutes from hotel staff. He insisted that the US Mission “took pains” to confirm th...

‘Buhari’s Germany trip not for any medical check-up’

Image
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has dismissed the insinuations that President Muhammadu Buhari’s three-day visit to Germany was more of a medical trip than official engagements. Okorocha, who was part of the president’s entourage to Berlin, Germany, made the clarification in his reaction to media interview granted by a Kano-based social commentator, Dr Junaid Muhaamed. Muhammed had alleged that Buhari visited Germany on Friday to seek medical attention over an undisclosed illness.                                                               German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari. Okorocha, who spoke to State House correspondents in Abuja, however, debunked the allegation and said that the official engagements of Buhari in Germany, had no connection, whatsoever, with medication. He said ...

Godogodo killings, unforgivable crime—Sen Laah

KADUNA—Senator Danjuma Laah, (PDP, Kaduna South), has described as unforgivable the invasion of Godogodo in Southern Kaduna last weekend by herdsmen, who allegedly killed 20 persons and injured scores of others.  The death toll in the Saturday and Sunday attacks rose to 40 Monday, as residents have abandoned the community located in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Senator Laah, who was surrounded by beleaguered survivors and stern-looking soldiers and policemen, lamented that relevant authorities have refused to give the soldiers and police stationed in the semi-urban town enough men and equipment, welfare and other incentives to motivate them to bring out their best. Laah, who arrived Godogodo at 8a.m., Monday, inspected the carnage and later addressed the mourning crowd. Reps, NIMASA DG clash over contract award

ABUJA—The House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration and the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dakuku Peterside, yesterday disagreed sharply over the amount owed the agency and the ‘controversial’ award of contract to recover alleged $5 billion debts for the agency. While, Chairman of the Committee, Umar Bago, insisted that the debt was about $5 billion, Peterside disagreed, saying the debt profile from 2004 till date was $420.5 million. According to Bago, there have been a plethora of petitions over the recent award of contract to a firm, SNECO Financial Services, which was said to have been incorporated on April 4, 2016, which the petitioners claimed breached due process. But the NIMASA DG, Peterside, who was a former member of the House, told the committee that the agency complied with all due processes required in awarding the contract and that the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, awarded a c...

The First Lady And Her Aso Ville Disparagements

The informal office of the First Lady of a country or a state is a concept extremely African. Often, the world is assailed with the bogus appellation of the “First Lady” of Ghana, Ethiopia, Togo or Nigeria and the rest. In contrast, it is something of a taboo to hear of anything in the semblance of something like “The First Lady” of America or Britain or even Brazil. For instance they are known as “Wife of American President” or “Wife of the British Prime Minister.” Women are powerful as documented in the Biblical story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden known to all. However, the perception of Africans is different. The average African believes behind every successful man is the shadow of a woman. So, African nations have seen First Ladies who wield far more tremendous influence than their husbands whom destiny has entrusted leadership of these countries. Nigeria shared this burden in her recent history, when former President Goodluck Jonathan held sway in Aso Rock. His wife, D...

One fan, named in Turkish press as Mehmet Akdeniz,...
