Illegal police uniform factory discovered in Police College

      ON OCTOBER 11, 201612:04 AMIN NEWSCOMMENTS By Evelyn Usman The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a factory inside the Police College in Ikeja, where police uniforms and other accessories, are illegally produced and sold. Some of the uniforms and other police paraphernalia recovered from the factory. Police arrested four persons, all women, among them two nursing mothers. Several police uniforms with different ranks, badges, belts, boots cardigans, caps and force numbers were recovered from the suspects. Vanguard gathered that investigation was still on to ascertain whether the force numbers were authentic.           The arrest came on the heels of petitions to the Inspector-General of Police, IG, Idris Ibrahim, following which he instituted a panel of inquiry headed by a retired IG. JTF kills suspected militant, arrests oil thieves in Niger Delta

         ON OCTOBER 13, 20166:26 PMIN NEWSCOMMENTS The joint military task force deployed to the Niger Delta to protect oil facilities said it arrested several oil theft suspects and killed a suspected militant in a gun duel. This is contained in a statement issued by Lt.-Cdr. Thomas Otuji, Spokesman of the military force “Operation Delta Safe,”. According to the statement, the operations were carried out within the past seven days across the Niger Delta region. “In one of the operations, troops arrived the suspected militants’ hideouts following a tip off and engaged them in a gun battle. “One was killed and two suspects arrested. “Items recovered include one AK- 47 rifle and a magazine loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62 millimeter special ammunition.” In another development, troops of Operation Delta Safe deployed to Southern Akwa Ibom received distress calls from the public of illegalities along Quo Iboe Terminal Jetty waterside in Ibeno community. Lagos launches free adult education programme (Èkó Å„kẹ kòó)                   ON OCTOBER 13, 20166:32 PMIN NEWSCOMMENTS Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday launched an Adult Education Programme tagged ‘Lagos is Learning (Èkó Å„kẹ kòó)’, a move he said was in line with his administration’s commitment to combat the illiteracy level in the State. Governor Ambode, who spoke at the launch of the programme, held at the Police College, Ikeja, said the target was to raise the literacy level in the State from 85 per cent to 100 per cent within the next three years. To achieve this, the Governor said the adult education centers in the State would be increased from 522 to 1000, while additional 1000 teachers would be engaged, adding that the programme would be free of charge for participants so as to accommodate more people.   Senate approves 3% VAT for N’East devt Senate approves 3% VAT for N’East devt The Senate, today, resolved to set aside 3% of the Federal Value Added Taxes (VAT) for the development of ravaged North-eastern part of the country. Also, the Senate has agreed that the headquarters of the proposed North East Development Commission (NEDC) will be sited in Maiduguri, Borno state. The resolution of the Senate followed the consideration of a report of its ad hoc committee on NEDC Bill, headed by Senator Sam Egwu from Ebonyi state. Although the Bill is yet to be passed by the Senate, unlike the House of Representatives, it has however resolved the three grey areas which stalled its passage since June this year. Lawmakers from the North-East in June this year, disagreed on where the headquarters of the proposed NEDC should be located. The anti-graft agency made the vow on Wednesday in Lagos through its Deputy Director of Operations, Mr. Illiyasu Kwarbai, when he received a group of protesters who submitted a petition against Mrs Jonathan and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The Protesters, under the aegis of Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre, HRDAC, accused the EFCC of being selective in its anti-graft war, and wondered why Patience was still walking freely in spite of the evidence, which they said the EFCC had against her. Babalola spoke alongside the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose on Wednesday, at the foundation laying ceremony of the new Ekiti State High Court complex in Ado Ekiti. According to Babalola, the normal thing that should have been done if the judges were found to have done something offensive, was to report them to the National Judicial Council for disciplinary action.   Controversy trails release of 21 Chibok girls Controversy trails release of 21 Chibok girls The circumstances behind the release of the 21 out of the 218 abducted Chibok girls is becoming controversial as the Federal Government and local sources have given different accounts. While the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, maintained that there was no swap of prisoners or financial inducement for the release of the girls, local sources in the North East say four Boko Haram commanders were swapped for the girls. Mohammed, while addressing a press conference in Abuja  on Thursday , told journalists that the 21 girls were released without government releasing any member of Boko Haram currently in custody. More troubles for judiciary, as EFCC says it’s probing 8 judges, 2 registrars More troubles for judiciary, as EFCC says it’s probing 8 judges, 2 registrars A new twist has been added to the ongoing allegations of corrupt practices in the judiciary, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  Thursday , said it is currently investigating eight judges and two registrars. This was disclosed in a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, adding that the investigations being carried out by the commission are at advanced stages. According to Uwujaren, some of the judges and registrars with cases to answer would soon be made to appear in court, adding that some of the suspects who were invited made useful statements which aided the ongoing investigations. It would be recalled that two Supreme Court justices were among those arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS for alleged corruption and professional misconduct.
