Remembering the sad tale of the "ALUU4" ordeal

Jungle justice can be defined as the capital punishment meted out by individuals without any legal authority on a suspected individual.
This form of justice has occurred frequently in Africa where people still believe in the old method of taking justice into their own hands, for sometimes petty crimes.
Everyday only in Nigeria, someone is killed by jungle justice, the nation is said to have the  highest rate in Africa.
On October 5, 2012 four promising students of University of Port Harcourt, Chiadika Biringa, Lloyde Toku Mike, Tekena Elkanah and Ugonna Obuzor, all first sons of their parents were killed without any justification on accusation of being cultists and thieves.

These young men had their bright future snapped from them by blood hungry men.
The murder of these young men might have gone unsolved if not for the mass public outcry.

The security forces who seem to never investigate matters concerning jungle justice had to direct members to arrest the suspects.
Just last week, the mother of a teenager set ablaze over allegations that he stole N1500 cried out for justice.
Her son Emmanuel was allegedly set ablaze by the man who runs the bar, Mr. Bidemi Shittu, for allegedly stealing N1,500 at a roadside bar called Golden Fingers, in Akoka, Ibafo area of Ogun State. The boy died from the horrific burn injuries he sustained six days later in the hospital.
The mother cried out and said: “When I got the call from my sister who broke the news about my son to me, I immediately called the man (Shittu). I know him and had spoken with him many times over the phone in the past. Anytime I missed my son and wanted to speak with him, I called the man and told him to allow Emmanuel the phone.
“I asked speak with me on him if it was true what had happened to my son and he denied it. But he said Emmanuel was in the hospital. He did not give further details.
“I was like a zombie when I rushed down to Ibafo from Abeokuta. I could not even remember how I got into a bus and arrived Ibafo. Life went out of me.
“How could I have thought that anything bad would happen to my son? All I want now is justice for him, either jungle justice or normal justice.
“My son’s killer has taken a life, he must pay for it. I still cannot believe that my son could be killed just like that in a place where his father works.”

Due to this murder, Emmanuel’s father has gone mad and has been rushed to a hospital.
The supporters of jungle justice always say that this is the old way in which things are done, but we no longer live in ancient times.
The believe that justice will never happen if not taken into own hands is wrong and perpetrators need to be re educated to function in an ever-changing world.
Battabox, went around town last year to gather the reasons people thought of jungle justice.
The reactions were as follows…
– Most Times i think jungle justice pays, but not to the point of murder.
– If someone believes in jungle justice, the person is not normal.
– Most of us, don’t even know the offense committed by the suspect, all we hear is Ole Ole(thief) and before you know it, he is on fire.
– If you catch a suspect, take him to the police.

– I have witnessed a situation where someone was caught once, taken to the police and a couple of weeks later, the same individual was caught committing the same act.
– If i intervene, i might lose my life, cause they would accuse me of being in cohorts with the suspect.
– The best way to end this jungle justice is by educating the people responsible for these crimes.

Remember, the law states that no one is guilty, until established by the court of law.
if the rule was an eye for an eye, everyone would be blind in the country.
