General Ayinla Kollington needs no introduction in the Nigerian music industry. He started music in 1965 alongside the late Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and changed his band’s name to Fuji 78 in the late 1970s.
Talking to Kollington is less stressful as revealed in this encounter with him recently.
Kebe n kwara as he is fondly called looked fit and energetic, this he attributed to God and daily exercise.
“Yes. I give thanks to God for His mercies,” he said.
Asked the secret of his youthful look and where the energy is coming from, he replied: “God and women. Both are very important in man’s life.
“There are some things that I can’t do again but God and women are very key in my daily life.”
Perhaps you are still planning to have another wife?
“I can still marry another wife. There is nothing wrong with that if I marry another wife,” he revealed.
No doubt all his children are doing well, but he would not reveal the number of his wives and especially that of his children.
According to him, it is as a taboo in Yoruba land.
“I didn’t know you would ask me that question. I would have done the calculation before your arrival. Well, it is a taboo in the part of the world I come from to count one’s children. I can only say I am married and blessed with children,” he explained.
We learnt that you are now a Christian, how true is this?
He replied: “There is nothing bad if I become a Christian, we are serving same God, only the way we communicate to Him is different. Most of my children are Christians now. Would I stop them from worshiping God the way they like?
“If I want to pray today, I don’t need to go to anywhere. I kneel down beside my bed and pray to God.”
Kollington is a musician from Ilota, a village on the outskirt of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. He is also called Baba ‘latika, Kebe-n-Kwara, Baba alagbado. He was born 1953 in Ibadan, Oyo state.
