Papa Wemba’s last moment on stage Few days back, Michael Jackson’s rival Prince Rogers Nelson was seen dead in an elevator in his home in Minnesota, USA. Just minutes ago on Sunday, April 24, another music legend has been confirmed dead in Congo, after he slummed on stage. The Congolese music legend, Papa Wemba was reported to have slummed on stage mid-way to one of his songs and he died after in Abidjan, Ivory Coast as he dramatically fell on the floor. However, his backup singers rushed to him immediately to assist him before they called the ambulance. Confirming the sudden death of Papa Wemba, the organisers of the show from FEMUA immediately organized a press conference where the music icon was confirmed dead. I thought it was a scene for the concert. But then I see people from the Ivorian Red Cross pop up on stage. Suddenly we cut the signal of the Ivorian television. I tried to talk to call the manager of Papa Wemba abroad, Cornelie. He told me that Papa Wemba fell during a concert. I remember ten minutes later, I was told that he is in intensive care. I call thirty minutes after, Cornelie told me that Papa Wemba passed away.Born Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba was reported to one of Africa’s most popular musicians. The Congolese band leader, inspired a cult movement known as the Sapeurs whose members, young men, spend huge amounts of money on designer clothes.
In 2004, he was convicted of people-smuggling in France and spent three months in prison. A Belgian court convicted him of the same crime in 2012, handing down a fine of 22,000 euros (£17,143; $24,690) and suspended prison sentence of 15 months. In addition to the prison time he spent in Europe, he was once jailed in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), for allegedly having an affair with a general’s daughter. His conviction in France related to a racket whereby illegal immigrants were taken to Europe posing as members of his band.
