An albatross that died after swallowing a shark whole was found off the coast of Wellington in New Zealand.

The large bird was found by a reseacher at the Museum of New Zealand, who was even more shocked to see a shark’s tail protruding from its throat.

The scientist took both animals to the lab for further examination that showed the shark took up almost the bird’s whole body cavity.

“Albatrosses are mainly scavengers but they have very sharp beaks so can normally slice up bigger prey items before swallowing them.

This shark had very leathery rough skin and perhaps the albatross assumed that it could slice it up when it grabbed it, but ended up swallowing the whole thing – with tragic consequences,” Alan Tennyson, a curator of the museum said.

However, the greedy bird bit off more than he could chew and choked to death after trying to swallow the seal shark whole.
The shark and bird will be turned into skeletons for research and fossil remains identification.
